Exploring Your City in a New Way

One of the best ways to get out and explore your city in a new way is by geocaching. If you’ve never heard of geocaching before, here is a quick definition from Google:

the recreational activity of hunting for and finding a hidden object by means of GPS coordinates posted on a website. . . .”

Geocaches are essentially little treasure chest that people in your community have hidden. These caches could be anywhere and contain anything. A typical geocache is a small box or cylinder that has a variety of trinkets (old action figures, pens, stickers- little things someone wouldn’t mind leaving behind) and a notebook so that you can “leave you mark” and show that you found the cache.

Geocaches are registered in a database (linked below) and are mapped for your area. Once you log onto the site and input your zip code or city, you will see all of the caches in your area and the coordinates for each one.

Be warned- some are extremely difficult to find. But that’s what makes it interesting!

The idea behind this is to treasure hunt. So, when you go geocaching, be sure to bring along some little trinkets you wouldn’t mind leaving for someone else. The concept is to take something and leave something behind for other geocachers.

When I was in college, a few friends and I went geocaching around a local park in our area and found a couple caches. It took us over an hour to find the first cache and once we did, we felt like we had found a little gem.

The experience itself is definitely worth it and I recommend that everyone tries geocaching at least once.

Happy Hunting!
